Yoga is all about relationship. Throughout all of the breathing, asana, and meditation exercises of vinyasa yoga, we seek to align and balance breath and movement, strength and flexibility, body and mind so that we can find that perfect state of energetic equilibrium between activity and relaxation that allows life to "flow."

In our February yoga workshop, we will explore the principles of relationship and balance through the practice of poses and counterposes, intense vinyasa and deep release and relaxation, and a little bit of play around partner yoga - postures that can be practiced à deux. The day will revolve around backbending postures, which stimulate the body and the mind, and relieve fatigue, counteract depression, and open the heart on both a physiological and a subtle/energy level.  Backbends are a great way to counteract the forward-slumping posture that most people spend most of their time in (working at a desk, in front of a computer, etc.) and are a perfect antidote to the midwinter blues or blahs. Active backbends, restorative backbends, and partner backbends will give us the opportunity to dive even deeper into our exploration and experience of the heart-opening practice of yoga that helps us to feel more balanced within, and maybe more connected to the world around us.

yoga v. pilates

Don't call me a traitor, but I recently started taking Pilates classes.

Yoga is a complete exercise for the body and mind, which balances strength and flexibility and helps to even out the muscles of the body and improve posture and maintain the health of the spine. But so does Pilates. So what gives? Pilates is helping me to find the centering and core strength to support my yoga practice. So, in the words of my Pilates instructor here in St. Rémy (who also teaches yoga), it's not Pilates or Yoga, it's Pilates for Yoga.  Many yogis find themselves becoming hyper-flexible in the spine and pelvis, which can lead to injuries if not balanced with core strength. That's where Pilates comes to the rescue.

I am often asked, what is the difference between Yoga and Pilates? And apparently the question gets asked a lot. Even Oprah has something to say on the subject.  The two schools share some of the same movements, exercises, and principles, such as body awareness, concentration, coordination, core strength, and breath linked to movement (flow).

While Vinyasa Yoga is more vigorous and high-energy and helps to awaken, strengthen, and stretch the whole body, Pilates teaches how to strengthen and move from the core: the muscles that surround and support our pelvis and spine, including the abdominals, hip flexors, and pelvic floor muscles. Yoga also works with core strength and stabilization, but sometime we lose focus on the core when we move through multiple vinyasas and sequences without total concentration, which can lead to strain or injury.

I borrowed this image from a fitness blog... it is a great illustration of the Yoga v. Pilates debate.
I actually like to start my yoga classes with some Pilates-inspired exercises to wake up the core muscles and move the spine and joints through their full range-of-motion.  Sometimes it is helpful, as a yogi, to take a little vacation from standing poses and arm balances to integrate or re-learn how to stabilize the spine, shoulders, and pelvis - areas which can become problematic for overzealous yogis.

All in all, Vinyasa Yoga might be a better physical workout, while Pilates might benefit you more if you are working with injuries or imbalances. But Yoga and Pilates are also a perfect couple, complementary while different.

stage 19 janvier aux baux: ouverture pour la nouvelle année /// workshop january 19 in les baux: ouverture for the new year

Without further ado, here are the details for the first workshop of 2013! We will work with the theme of opening poses, especially those that target the creaky corners and joints -  such as the hips and shoulders - where we store not only physical tension but stress and emotional junk. Opening up these parts of the physical body not only feels good, but can also help to release old "stuff" and blockages to make space for the free circulation of new energy.

The workshop will take place in two parts: a vigorous, warming morning practice of vinyasa flow to loosen things up and get them moving followed by deep opening poses, and a more mellow afternoon session of slower flow and longer-held releasing and restorative poses. Option to participate in one or the other, or both! We will take a break in the middle of the day for a potluck-style lunch.

2013 yoga workshops /// stages de yoga 2013

In 2013, I am thrilled to have a new project to bring vinyasa flow yoga to more people in the Alpilles region - both residents and visitors.  This year, I will be offering monthly yoga workshops in various locations in and around Saint-Rémy de Provence. These workshops will be either one half-day or a full day long, and focus on a particular element or family of poses or asanas and their physical and energetic benefits. The workshops will be open to beginners interested in discovering vinyasa flow yoga, as well as to more advanced yogis looking to deepen their practice.

At the end of 2012, we had our first workshop on forward bending and inverting poses, which help to turn the focus inward and recenter ourselves - just what we need in the middle of the winter and during the busy holiday season.

The theme of January's workshop will be opening, and we will explore poses and sequences that open all of the creaky corners of the physical and subtle bodies - especially the hips and shoulders, where we store tension and stress - in order to liberate our energy for the new year. The workshop will take place on Saturday, January 19th at a very special location in Les Baux de Provence. Please contact me for details on how to reserve. *possibility to sleep onsite for an extra charge* yoga sleepover dance-party anyone?

Le Loft dans la Roche: venue for our workshops on January 19th and February 16th in Les Baux de Provence
Here's a sneak preview of what's to come:

In February, we will continue the opening theme with a backbending workshop. Backbends are also referred to as "heart-opening" poses, and can work to counteract fatigue, depression, and the hunched-over posture characteristic of spending our days at a desk or in front of a computer. This workshop is confirmed for Saturday, February 16 in Les Baux de ProvenceThe afternoon session will include some partner yoga... why not come with your loved-one to share an alternative way to celebrate Valentine's Day?

In Spring we always do a big spring cleaning, so March's workshop will be a detox special to help you wring out and rinse your tissues, cells, muscles, and organs with twisting postures and cleansing breathing techniques.  March 23 at this gorgeous house in St. Rémy de Provence.

In April, with spring in full swing, we will workshop balancing poses - both standing balances and arm balances, which require that we learn to find the strength of our core in order to expand in all directions, and root down into the earth in order to reach for the sky. Whether we balance on our feet (or one foot!) or on our hands, these poses give a sensation of power and growth, and will generate a blast of energy and a sensation of flying like the birds for which many balancing postures are named! April 20-21 in St. Rémy with Harriet Spalding.
